According to the legend, a group of Portuguese sailors, while on their way to Sri Lanka, were caught in a severe storm and were about to sink. They prayed to Our Lady of Good Health for their safety and miraculously, they were saved. In gratitude, they brought the image of Our Lady of Good Health and built a church in Idaikattur.

Over the years, the church has become an important pilgrimage center for Christians in Tamil Nadu and beyond. The church celebrates its annual festival during the month of September, which attracts a large number of devotees from all over the state.

In 1928, the church was rebuilt and expanded, and today it stands as a magnificent structure with a beautiful Gothic architecture. The church also houses a museum that exhibits various objects related to the history and traditions of the church.
