Lakshmi Sahgal

Lakshmi Sahgal, also known as Captain Lakshmi, was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement and an important leader in the Indian National Army (INA) during World War II.

Early Life: Lakshmi Sahgal was born on October 24, 1914, in Madras (now Chennai), India. She came from a middle-class family and was educated in Madras and Lahore.

Medical Career: Lakshmi Sahgal studied medicine and became a doctor. She pursued her studies in Singapore and then moved to Malaya (now Malaysia) to practice medicine. In Malaya, she became involved in the struggle for India’s independence.

Role in the Indian National Army: In 1942, she met Subhas Chandra Bose, the leader of the INA, who was seeking support from Indians in Southeast Asia for the cause of India’s independence. She joined the INA and became a captain in the army. Her role was primarily in the medical corps, providing medical assistance to wounded soldiers.

Rani of Jhansi Regiment: Lakshmi Sahgal played a crucial role in forming the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, an all-female combat unit within the INA. This regiment comprised women who were willing to fight for India’s independence. She was its commander and played a significant role in training and leading the female soldiers.

Participation in the Burma Campaign: During World War II, the INA, led by Subhas Chandra Bose, fought alongside the Japanese forces in the Burma Campaign. Lakshmi Sahgal and her Rani of Jhansi Regiment played an essential role in supporting the INA’s efforts in this campaign.

Surrender and Post-War Trials: When Japan surrendered in 1945, the INA also had to surrender to the Allied forces. Many of its members, including Lakshmi Sahgal, were taken as prisoners of war. She was put on trial for her involvement with the INA but was eventually released due to widespread public support for her and her comrades.

Post-Independence Activities: After India gained independence in 1947, Lakshmi Sahgal continued to be involved in various political and social activities. She joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and remained active in politics.
