Role in the Freedom Movement: Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee actively participated in the Indian independence movement, which aimed to end British colonial rule. He was associated with various freedom fighters and was a vocal critic of British policies in India.
Swadeshi Movement: He was an ardent supporter of the Swadeshi movement, which aimed to promote Indian-made products and boycott British goods. He encouraged people to use khadi (hand-spun cloth) as a symbol of self-reliance and self-sufficiency.
Social Reforms: Chatterjee was not only involved in the political struggle but also worked for social reforms. He advocated for women’s education and the eradication of social evils such as child marriage and the caste system.
Founding “Yugantar”: In 1906, Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee, along with Aurobindo Ghosh and others, founded the revolutionary Bengali newspaper “Yugantar.” This publication was instrumental in spreading nationalist ideas and fomenting resistance against British rule.
Imprisonment: Chatterjee’s involvement in revolutionary activities led to his arrest and imprisonment by the British authorities multiple times.
