Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee (also spelled as Jogesh Chunder Chatterjee) was a prominent Indian freedom fighter and social reformer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and worked tirelessly to promote various social and educational reforms.

Early Life: Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee was born on February 25, 1877, in the village of Bhowanipore, which is now in West Bengal, India. He came from a well-educated family.

Education: Jogesh Chandra received a good education, including a degree in law. His education played a crucial role in shaping his political and social views.

Role in the Freedom Movement: Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee actively participated in the Indian independence movement, which aimed to end British colonial rule. He was associated with various freedom fighters and was a vocal critic of British policies in India.

Swadeshi Movement: He was an ardent supporter of the Swadeshi movement, which aimed to promote Indian-made products and boycott British goods. He encouraged people to use khadi (hand-spun cloth) as a symbol of self-reliance and self-sufficiency.

Social Reforms: Chatterjee was not only involved in the political struggle but also worked for social reforms. He advocated for women’s education and the eradication of social evils such as child marriage and the caste system.

Founding “Yugantar”: In 1906, Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee, along with Aurobindo Ghosh and others, founded the revolutionary Bengali newspaper “Yugantar.” This publication was instrumental in spreading nationalist ideas and fomenting resistance against British rule.

Imprisonment: Chatterjee’s involvement in revolutionary activities led to his arrest and imprisonment by the British authorities multiple times.

Death: Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee passed away on July 7, 1946, in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He lived to see India gain independence in 1947 but did not live long to enjoy it.
