History of Scudder Memorial Hospital

Scudder Memorial Hospital (SMH) was a renowned hospital that operated in India for over 100 years. The hospital was established in 1900 by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, an American christian medical missionary, in the town of Vellore, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Dr. Scudder was inspired to start the hospital after witnessing the suffering of women in India who lacked access to medical care. The hospital initially began as a small clinic, but it soon expanded to become a full-fledged hospital, providing medical care to both men and women. Over the years, SMH became known for its exceptional medical care and pioneering work in medical education and research.

The hospital played a vital role in training generations of doctors and nurses, and it also made significant contributions to medical research. SMH was also notable for its commitment to providing medical care to all, regardless of their ability to pay.

The hospital offered free or subsidized treatment to patients who could not afford to pay for medical care, and it also provided outreach programs to underserved communities. In 1983, SMH Hospital merged with the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore, becoming a part of one of the most prestigious medical institutions in India.

Today, the hospital continues to operate under the name of the Christian Medical College and Hospital, providing world-class medical care and education to thousands of patients and students every year.
