HISTORY
Vanchinathan, also known as Vanchi, was a prominent figure in the Indian freedom struggle against British colonial rule. He is remembered for his role in the fight for India’s independence and his ultimate sacrifice.
History of Vanchinathan:
Early Life: Vanchinathan was born on June 17, 1886, in the village of Shenkottai in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India. He came from a family of agricultural background and grew up with a deep sense of patriotism and a strong desire to see India free from British rule.
The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre: The Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919, in which British troops under the command of General Reginald Dyer killed hundreds of unarmed Indian civilians, deeply affected Vanchinathan and fueled his resolve to take action against British oppression.
The Tirunelveli Shooting: On June 17, 1911, which happened to be his 25th birthday, Vanchinathan carried out a daring assassination of Robert Ashe, the District Collector of Tirunelveli, in the Tirunelveli railway station. He disguised himself as a lawyer and approached Ashe, who was known for his repressive actions against Indians. Vanchinathan shot Ashe, and after a brief altercation, turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. This act of violence was intended to send a strong message to the British authorities and inspire others to join the freedom movement.
Legacy: Vanchinathan’s sacrifice and courage inspired many Indians in their struggle for independence. He became a symbol of resistance against British rule in the region. His act of defiance served as a rallying point for others who sought to break free from colonial oppression.
Commemoration: Vanchinathan’s legacy is remembered and celebrated in Tamil Nadu and across India. Streets, schools, and monuments have been named after him to honor his sacrifice and dedication to the cause of Indian independence.
