Velu Nachiyar, also known as “Veilu Nachiar” or “Veera Mangai Velu Nachiyar,” was a courageous and influential queen in the 18th century in the region of Tamil Nadu, India. Her life and legacy are significant in the history of Indian freedom fighters and women leaders.

Early Life: Velu Nachiyar was born in 1730 in the Ramnad kingdom in Tamil Nadu. She belonged to the Maravar community, which was known for its martial traditions. Her original name was “Vellayammal.”

Marriage: She was married to Muthu Vaduganathar, the king of Sivaganga, who belonged to the Ramnad dynasty. They had a daughter together.

Resistance Against the British: Velu Nachiyar’s life took a significant turn when the British East India Company began expanding its control in South India. Her husband, Muthu Vaduganathar, was killed by the British, and her daughter was captured. This fueled her determination to resist British rule in India.

Alliance with Marudu Brothers: Velu Nachiyar formed an alliance with the Marudu brothers, who were also freedom fighters in the region. They provided her with military support and assistance in her quest to defeat the British.

Strategies and Innovations: Velu Nachiyar is known for her innovative military strategies. She trained a special unit of women soldiers called “udaiyars” who were experts in warfare and espionage. She also used unconventional methods like suicide squads and guerrilla warfare to fight against the British.

Reconquest of Sivaganga: Velu Nachiyar and her allies successfully retook the kingdom of Sivaganga from the British in 1780. She became the queen once again, ruling her kingdom independently.

Legacy: Velu Nachiyar is regarded as one of the earliest Indian queens to have fought against British colonialism. Her bravery and contributions to the freedom struggle have made her a revered figure in Tamil Nadu’s history.

Death: Velu Nachiyar passed away in 1796, and her legacy continued to inspire future generations of freedom fighters in India.

Recognition: In recent years, Velu Nachiyar’s contributions to India’s struggle for independence have received more recognition. Streets, statues, and institutions have been named after her to honor her memory.
