Veerapandiya Kattabomman, also known as Veerapandiya Katta Bomman, was a Tamil warrior and chieftain who lived during the late 18th century in the region of Tamil Nadu, India. He is remembered as a heroic and valiant figure in the struggle against British colonial rule.

Early Life: Veerapandiya Kattabomman was born in 1760 in Panchalankurichi, a small village in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, which was then part of the Kingdom of Pudukkottai. His original name was Kattabommu, and he belonged to the Kattabommu clan of the Nayak dynasty.
Rebellion Against British East India Company: In the late 18th century, the British East India Company was expanding its influence in India, and they sought to exert control over various princely states and regions. Kattabomman, who had become the chieftain of Panchalankurichi, resisted British attempts to tax and control his territory.
Conflict with the British: The conflict between Kattabomman and the British escalated when the British accused him of tax evasion and demanded that he submit to their authority. Kattabomman refused and took up arms against the British. This marked the beginning of his rebellion in the late 1790s.
Battle of Polygar: One of the significant battles in Kattabomman’s rebellion was the Battle of Polygar in 1799. Kattabomman and his forces fiercely resisted the British forces led by Colonel James Caldwell. Though Kattabomman’s forces fought valiantly, he was eventually captured.
Trial and Execution: Veerapandiya Kattabomman was captured and subjected to a trial by the British. In 1799, he was sentenced to death and hanged in the town of Kayatharu. His execution was a turning point in the resistance against British colonialism in Tamil Nadu.
