Tamil Nadu fishermen, 9 individuals released by Sri Lankan court.
On the 25th date, beyond the international maritime boundary in the Bay of Bengal from Ramanathapuram District, more than 2,000 fishermen ventured into the sea. They were fishing near the Neduntheevu area. At that time, Sri Lankan naval personnel, who had come around the vicinity, accused them of crossing the boundary and detained 9 fishermen on charges of intruding into their territorial waters.
Furthermore, they also confiscated 2 fishing boats.The 9 detained fishermen were produced before the Jaffna Magistrate Court, after being arrested by the Coastal Security Department, and have been remanded to the Jaffna Prison.
In this situation, the case of the fishermen was taken up for investigation in the Sri Lankan Coast Guard Court today. The Chief Justice, who heard the case at that time, released the 9 fishermen by imposing various conditions and issuing an acquittal. The released 9 fishermen are expected to return home within a couple of days, as mentioned in the report.
